[ 1 ] Noch einmal möchte ich mich namentlich an die jüngeren Freunde in der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft wegen der Begründung der Jugendsektion wenden. Es scheinen sich innerhalb der Kreise unserer Jugend zwei Meinungen gegenüberzustehen. Die eine empfindet das Jung-Sein als etwas, das suchen muß. Sie fühlt einen Zug zur Anthroposophie hin, weil sie da Befriedigung für ihr Suchen zu finden hofft. Sie ist gewahr geworden, daß dieses Suchen nach den Tiefen der Seele gehen muß, und daß die zeitgenössische Zivilisation nach diesen Tiefen nicht führen kann. Es gibt eine Jugend, die so nach Esoterik sucht, weil sie ahnend entdeckt hat, daß in der Esoterik der wahre Inhalt des Menschen erst erlebt werden kann.

[ 1 ] Once again, I would like to address the younger members of the Anthroposophical Society specifically regarding the establishment of the Youth Section. There seem to be two opposing views within our youth circles. One group experiences youth as something that must be sought. They feel drawn to anthroposophy because they hope to find fulfillment for their search there. They have come to realize that this search must go to the depths of the soul, and that contemporary civilization cannot lead to these depths. There is a group of young people who seek esotericism in this way because they have intuitively discovered that it is only through esotericism that the true essence of the human being can be experienced.

[ 2 ] Diese Jugend wird den Weg zu dem leicht finden, was der Vorstand der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft mit der Jugendsektion anstrebt. Und dieser Vorstand wird niemand in seinem selbständigen Streben beeinträchtigen. Er wird ein Herz haben für diese Selbständigkeit. Aber er wird auch eingedenk der Tatsache sein, daß die Pflege des esoterischen Lebens ihm als seine Aufgabe zugewachsen ist. Ihm wird diese Sorge die erste sein. Er wird die Jugendsektion so leiten, daß in ihr der Esoterik ihr Recht zukommt, und er glaubt, aus der wahren Esoterik auch die wahre «Jugend-Weisheit» finden zu können.

[ 2 ] These young people will easily find their way toward what the Executive Council of the Anthroposophical Society aims to achieve with the Youth Section. And this Executive Council will not interfere with anyone’s independent endeavors. It will have a heart for this independence. But it will also be mindful of the fact that the cultivation of the esoteric life has become its responsibility. This concern will be its foremost priority. It will guide the Youth Section in such a way that the esoteric is given its rightful place within it, and it believes that it can also find true “youthful wisdom” within true esotericism.

[ 3 ] Aber es gibt noch eine andere Jugendmeinung. Diese wird leicht versucht, das Jung-Sein in einem so absoluten Sinne zu nehmen, daß ihr auch schon das Streben nach Esoterik wie das Aufnehmen eines Fremdkörpers erscheint. Sie möchte vor allem, unbeirrt von allem, was von außen kommt, sich in das eigene Jung-Sein vertiefen, und sich dieses zum Verständnis bringen.

[ 3 ] But there is another perspective among young people. This perspective tends to take “being young” in such an absolute sense that even the pursuit of esotericism seems to them like the ingestion of a foreign object. Above all, undeterred by anything coming from the outside, they wish to immerse themselves in their own youth and come to understand it.

[ 4 ] In der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft hofft wohl auch die Jugend, die dieser Meinung ist, etwas zu finden. Sonst wäre sie gar nicht darinnen. Aber sie glaubt, der Anthroposophie erst den rechten Geist durch die Betätigung ihres Jung-Seins bringen zu müssen. Der Vorstand der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft wird weit davon entfernt sein, diesem Teile der Jugend mit einer philiströsen Kritik zu begegnen. Aber es könnte leicht geschehen, daß seine Absichten von manchem jungen Menschen in einem falschen Lichte gesehen werden. Denn er kann von seiner gewonnenen Einsicht nicht abweichen, daß in der durch die Anthroposophische Gesellschaft versuchten Esoterik der Ewigkeitsstrom fließt, nach dem die Jugend hinstrebt. Er kann nicht in den Irrtum verfallen, daß die Esoterik durch das Jung-Sein erst ihre wahre Gestalt erhalten müsse, da er doch weiß, in der Esoterik wird die Jugend die rechten Wege finden, um im wahren Sinne «jung» sein zu können.

[ 4 ] Within the Anthroposophical Society, young people who share this view likely hope to find something as well. Otherwise, they would not be there at all. But they believe they must first infuse anthroposophy with the right spirit through the active expression of their youth. The Executive Council of the Anthroposophical Society is far from meeting this segment of the youth with philistine criticism. But it could easily happen that its intentions are viewed in a false light by some young people. For it cannot deviate from the insight it has gained that the stream of eternity, toward which the youth strives, flows through the esotericism pursued by the Anthroposophical Society. It cannot fall into the error of believing that esotericism must first take on its true form through youth, since it knows full well that in esotericism, young people will find the right paths to be “young” in the true sense.

[ 5 ] Ich spreche dieses aus, nicht weil ich auf einen Gegensatz zwischen einem Teile der Jugend und dem Vorstande hinweisen will. Einen solchen sehe ich nicht; und es kann vor einer praktischen Weltauffassung einen solchen gar nicht geben. Denn der Vorstand ist sich bewußt, daß ihm seine Aufgaben aus der geistigen Welt kommen; und er wird in allem die Wege zu gehen haben, die ihm von da gewiesen werden. Einen «Gegensatz» dazu im Felde seines Wirkens kann es für ihn nicht geben.

[ 5 ] I say this not because I wish to point out a conflict between a segment of the youth and the Executive Board. I do not see such a contrast; and from the perspective of a practical worldview, there cannot be one. For the Executive Board is aware that its tasks come from the spiritual world; and in all things, it will have to follow the paths shown to it from there. There can be no “contrast” to this within the sphere of its activity.

[ 6 ] Aber es wäre doch möglich, daß die Jugend selbst in Gegensätze hineintriebe, wenn der eine Teil sein Streben einseitig gegenüber dem andern betonte. Und das könnte der anthroposophischen Jugendbewegung unermeßlichen Schaden bringen. Es wird dies aber nicht geschehen, wenn die Jugend etwas, das sie von der «allzualt» gewordenen Zivilisation gelernt hat, schärfer beachten würde, als sie dies oft tut. Es ist ein gewisser Hang zur Abstraktion, zum Reden in bloßen Begriffen. Ich habe es in der vorangehenden Betrachtung ausgesprochen, wie wenig gut dies Abstrahieren der Jugend bekommt. In Wahrheit will das auch niemand in der Jugendbewegung. Aber im Reden über Jung-Sein, über die Ideale der Jugend ist es doch da. Es ist sogar ein bedenkliches Stück «Alter» in der heutigen Jugend. Besinnt sich demgegenüber die Jugend auf ihre wahren Erlebnisse, so wird sie finden, daß diese wie Fragestellungen sind, und daß die Esoterik der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft ihr wenigstens Versuche von Antworten entgegenbringt.

[ 6 ] But it is certainly possible that young people themselves could be driven into extremes if one group were to emphasize its aspirations in a one-sided manner at the expense of the other. And that could cause immeasurable harm to the anthroposophical youth movement. However, this will not happen if young people were to pay closer attention to something they have learned from a civilization that has become “too old” than they often do. It is a certain tendency toward abstraction, toward speaking in mere concepts. I have already stated in the preceding reflection how little this abstract thinking benefits young people. In truth, no one in the youth movement wants that either. But when talking about being young, about the ideals of youth, it is still there. There is even a troubling element of “old age” in today’s youth. If, on the other hand, young people reflect on their true experiences, they will find that these are like questions, and that the esotericism of the Anthroposophical Society offers them at least attempts at answers.

[ 7 ] Auf der Grundlage einer solchen praktischen Einsicht wird gewiß eine Verständigung zwischen einzelnen verschiedenen Meinungen in unserer Jugendbewegung erwachsen. Der Verkehr mit der Esoterik kann der Jugend selbst zum Erlebnis werden. Geschieht dieses, so wird die Jugend eben einsehen, daß sie gerade durch diesen Verkehr verwirklichen kann, was sie oft in unbestimmter Art sich ideell vor die Augen rückt. Geschieht es nicht, so könnte es leicht sein, daß ein Teil der Jugend nicht aus angeborenem, aber äußerlich aufgenommenem «Alt-Reden» sich einen theoretischen Vorhang schiebt vor das angedeutete Erlebnis.

[ 7 ] Based on such practical insight, an understanding between the various opinions within our youth movement will certainly emerge. Engagement with esotericism can become an experience for the young people themselves. If this happens, young people will come to realize that it is precisely through this engagement that they can bring to life what they often envision in a vague, idealistic way. If it does not happen, it could easily be that some young people—not out of an innate inclination, but based on externally absorbed “old talk”—will draw a theoretical curtain over the experience they have only hinted at.

[ 8 ] Wird die Jugend sich verstehen, so wird sie auch den Vorstand der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft verstehen.

[ 8 ] If young people can understand one another, they will also understand the Executive Council of the Anthroposophical Society.
