14. At the Free University, the essence of humanity should be brought to the fore

[ 1 ] Diese Institution kann nicht aus abstrakten Überlegungen von «oben her» zustande kommen. Sie muß aus den Bedürfnissen unserer Mitgliedschaft von «unten her» entstehen. Der Vorstand der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft hat den Plan gefaßt, eine Jugendsektion zu bilden, weil diese dem entspricht, was die jungen Menschen in unserer Gesellschaft aus den Tiefen ihres Wesens heraus suchen. Und er wird sie so gestalten, daß diesen Bedürfnissen in dem Maße, in dem sie auftreten, entsprochen werden kann.

[ 1 ] This institution cannot arise from abstract considerations “from above.” It must emerge “from below” out of the needs of our membership. The Executive Council of the Anthroposophical Society has decided to form a Youth Section because this corresponds to what young people in our society are seeking from the depths of their being. And it will be structured in such a way that these needs can be met as they arise.

[ 2 ] So muß es auch für die anderen Sektionen werden. Dazu aber ist notwendig, daß die Bedürfnisse, welche innerhalb unserer Mitgliederschaft zutage treten, auch wirklich durch die ganze Gesellschaft fließen und zuletzt sich in dem vereinigen, was man vom Vorstand am Goetheanum erwartet. Man sollte sich deshalb immer mehr zum Bewußtsein bringen, daß der Sinn der Weihnachtstagung nicht der war, einen bloßen «Verwaltungsvorstand» zu bilden. Gewiß, die «Verwaltung» muß da sein, und es soll nicht vergessen werden, daß sie notwendig ist und daß sie Sorgfalt und Genauigkeit zu entwickeln hat. Aber die Hauptsache wird sein, daß durch die Gesinnung in der Mitgliederschaft der Vorstand am Goetheanum wirklich in den Mittelpunkt der geistigen Interessen der Gesellschaft gestellt wird. In ihm sollte zusammenfließen, was an solchen geistigen Interessen vorhanden ist.

[ 2 ] This must also be the case for the other sections. For this to happen, however, it is necessary that the needs emerging within our membership truly flow through the entire Society and ultimately converge in what is expected of the Executive Council at the Goetheanum. We should therefore increasingly bring to mind that the purpose of the Christmas Conference was not merely to form an “administrative board.” Certainly, “administration” must be present, and we must not forget that it is necessary and that it must cultivate care and precision. But the main point will be that, through the attitude of the membership, the Executive Council at the Goetheanum is truly placed at the center of the Society’s spiritual interests. It is in this Council that all such spiritual interests should converge.

[ 3 ] Diesem Vorstand soll es ferne liegen, die Initiative in den einzelnen Teilen der Gesellschaft zu dem oder jenem in irgendeiner Art beschränken zu wollen. Aber man sollte es immer mehr als eine Notwendigkeit ansehen, daß alles, was in der Gesellschaft auftaucht, zum Wissen dieses Vorstandes gebracht werde. Er kann dann, was an dem einen Orte, oder von der einen Menschengruppe gewollt ist, in Einklang bringen mit dem, was von anderer Seite beabsichtigt wird. Dieser Vorstand wird nicht in einseitiger Art wie eine Behörde «von oben» wirken wollen; er wird es sich zur Aufgabe machen, offenes Herz und verständnisvollen Sinn zu haben für alles, was aus der Mitgliedschaft heraus nach Verwirklichung strebt. Er möchte in dieser Beziehung nur auch auf Verständnis nach der Richtung hin rechnen dürfen, daß man ihm entgegenkommt, tätig entgegenkommt, wo er aus seiner Initiative, aus den Zielen der anthroposophischen Bewegung heraus, etwas durchführen möchte. In diesem Sinne habe ich bei der Weihnachtstagung gesagt: dieser Vorstand soll ein Initiativ-Vorstand sein.

[ 3 ] This board should have no intention of restricting the initiative of individual segments of society in any way. However, it should increasingly be viewed as a necessity that everything that arises within society be brought to the attention of this board. It can then harmonize what is desired in one place or by one group of people with what is intended by others. This Executive Board does not wish to act in a one-sided manner like an authority “from above”; it will make it its task to maintain an open heart and an understanding mind toward everything that the membership strives to bring to fruition. In this regard, it would simply like to be able to count on understanding and cooperation in the sense that people will meet it halfway—actively and proactively—when it wishes to carry out something on its own initiative, based on the goals of the anthroposophical movement. In this sense, I said at the Christmas Conference: this Executive Council should be a proactive Executive Council.

[ 4 ] Wenn man immer mehr diesen Vorstand in solcher Art wird ansehen wollen, dann wird er in rechter Art der Berater werden können in allen Angelegenheiten der Gesellschaft. Und ein «Berater» möchte er sein; da er wohl weiß, daß es dem Geiste der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft gründlich widerspräche, wenn er ein «Verfüger» sein wollte. Er wird bei seinen Ratschlägen an nichts anderes appellieren als an die freie Einsicht der Mitglieder; aber er wird auch nur rechter «Berater» sein können, wenn in rechter Gesinnung an seinen Platz gebracht wird, was in den Absichten, in den Bestrebungen der Mitglieder liegt.

[ 4 ] If people are increasingly willing to view this Executive Council in this way, then it will be able to serve as a true advisor in all matters concerning the Society. And it wishes to be an “advisor”; for it knows full well that it would be fundamentally contrary to the spirit of the Anthroposophical Society if it were to act as a “ruler.” In offering his advice, he will appeal to nothing other than the members’ free judgment; but he will only be able to be a true “advisor” if what lies in the members’ intentions and aspirations is brought to bear on his role in the right spirit.

[ 5 ] Der Vorstand am Goetheanum möchte, daß so ferne wie möglich läge, in Paragraphen und Programmen eine Verbindung mit dem Wirken in der Gesellschaft herzustellen; er möchte, daß das unmittelbar Menschliche, das in jeder Einzelheit auch individuell wirken kann, zur ganz allgemeinen Geltung innerhalb der Gesellschaft komme. Und er möchte das vor allem bei alle dem erreichen, was für die Freie Hochschule für Geisteswissenschaft getan werden soll.

[ 5 ] The Executive Council at the Goetheanum wishes to avoid, as much as possible, establishing a connection between its work and that in society through paragraphs and programs; it wishes for the immediately human—which can also have an individual effect in every detail—to attain universal validity within society. And it wishes to achieve this above all in everything that is to be done for the School of Spiritual Science.
