An Anthroposophical Understanding of Humanity and Medicine, tr. SOL
Zehnter Vortrag
Tenth Lecture
[ 1 ] Above all, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Larkins and Dr. Larkins for allowing me, once again this evening—as I was able to do last year— present some thoughts—as I was able to do last year—on medical matters, on the sick human condition in contrast to the healthy one, and on therapeutic methods derived from the anthroposophical worldview and approach to research.
[ 2 ] If I may preface this with a few introductory remarks, it should above all be this: What anthroposophy—as understood here—is intended to contribute to individual branches of life, such as medicine, is in no way meant to contradict what is currently regarded as the scientific medical view. When one speaks from precisely such perspectives—as I will do this evening and tomorrow evening—one is very easily misunderstood, because the prevailing view today is that anything not limited to what is supposedly “exactly established” is somehow sectarian, something that cannot be taken seriously in a scientific sense. That is why I would like to note from the outset: Precisely the view that seeks to ground medicine in anthroposophy is not only full of appreciation but also full of understanding for all that is significant and great that has been accomplished in recent times, including in the field of medicine. And there can be no question whatsoever of my remarks being intended as some kind of amateurish or layman’s polemic against what is today recognized as standard medical practice or the like. The point is simply that, over the course of the last few centuries, our entire worldview has taken on a form that, in research, is limited to what can be established through the senses—either through experimentation or through direct observation—and to what the human intellect can then deduce on the basis of what is perceived by the senses.
[ 3 ] This approach to research was entirely justified for centuries. For if humanity had continued along the old paths, it would have strayed entirely into the realm of fantasy and daydreaming, leading to arbitrary assumptions and a wild proliferation of hypotheses. But it is true that human beings, as they exist in the world between birth and death, are not beings that can be truly known through the senses and the intellect; that human beings have a truly supersensory aspect just as they have a truly sensory aspect.
[ 4 ] And when we speak of healthy and sick people, we cannot help but ask ourselves: Can health and illness really be recognized solely in the way that is currently sought—through the study of the physical body with the aid of the sense organs, with the aid of those instruments that supplement the senses and lead to our experiments, and with the aid of the intellect? And here, a genuine—not a prejudiced—historical perspective can teach us that our understanding of human beings has originated from something entirely different than mere sensory observation. After all, we have a long history of human development behind us, including in regard to spiritual life.
[ 5 ] In ancient times—we might say as far back as three millennia ago, but certainly still during the period when Greek civilization, the ancient Greek civilization, was flourishing—there were no schools where one learned in the same way as one does in today’s schools. In today’s schools, one learns in such a way that, as a young person, one enters college with the entire structure of one’s soul already formed. One is guided through the individual academic disciplines—including, for example, the discipline that prepares one for medicine—and one is expected to make judgments based on the state of one’s soul as an eighteen-, nineteen-, or twenty-year-old.
[ 6 ] This was not the view of learning in earlier times; rather, the view of learning in earlier times was that one first had to develop inner powers, cultivate oneself, and develop further in order to then recognize what is truly human,
[ 7 ] Well, precisely because people in earlier times, due to their more primitive nature, were not inclined toward fantasy, it was possible to learn all aspects of life in the so-called Mysteries, based initially on such spiritual training and such spiritual discipline.
[ 8 ] That has, I would say, come to an end precisely since the founding of our universities in the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries. Since that time, we have been learning only in a rationalistic way. Rationalism leads to sharp logic, but on the other hand, it also leads to the inability to see anything beyond the external, material world.
[ 9 ] Now, over the course of the last few centuries, modern times have produced a magnificent body of external sensory truths. That cannot be denied. In fact, we possess such an extraordinarily vast body of sensory truths in biology, physiology, and all the sciences that lay the groundwork for medicine, that we have not yet even gotten around to organizing all the individual observations. There is an immense amount in these observations from which immeasurable insights can still be gained. But in these last few centuries, any human perspective that holds that souls must be led to perceive the supersensible has receded into the background. As a result, however, it has actually become impossible to truly and realistically investigate the human being in terms of health and illness. To substantiate what I am saying to some extent, I would simply like to point out that even today it is possible—as I have described in my books, including the one translated here under the title Initiation—to raise the soul to a level where it can perceive the spiritual in the human being in contrast to the material and the physical.
[ 10 ] This spiritual aspect within human beings is just as perceptible to spiritual observation—and can be made just as visible—as the physical and material aspects are to sensory observation. The difference is that sensory observation is organically integrated into our bodies without any effort on our part; spiritual observation, however, is something we must acquire. This spiritual observation, however, cannot be brought about through all sorts of mystical, nebulous exercises; rather, it can be brought about precisely by cultivating a disciplined life of thought and the ability to rest in one’s own thoughts. One need only methodically transform—through the education of the soul—that which one otherwise wishes to possess as a finished product: this resting in thought, this life in thought. If one truly manages—just as one otherwise experiments with the external world—to experiment, so to speak, with the soul itself for a time, allowing the soul to rest on a clearly comprehensible thought without thereby falling into any kind of autosuggestion, into any kind of drowsy state of consciousness, such as a hypnotic state—but rather if one practices in such a way that one further develops what can be retained through ordinary thinking—sobriety remains, but inwardly, on a soul level, the same process takes place that manifests outwardly in a trivial, physical way: that when one continually trains a muscle, it grows stronger, and one can do more with it—if one methodically exercises the soul again and again, it becomes stronger, more powerful, and perceives things differently.
[ 11 ] The first thing she observes is that human beings do not in fact consist solely of this physical body, which can be examined either with the naked eye, under a microscope, or in some other way, but that, in addition to this physical body, human beings possess an etheric body. Don’t be put off by the term “etheric body”; I could just as easily choose a different expression, but one simply must have a term. So one can observe in the human being, in addition to the ordinary physical body—which is structured in such a way that it can be examined through anatomy and physiology as we understand them today—the etheric body. This is not the same as what the amateurish concept of “life force” represented in earlier scientific eras; it is something truly perceptible, truly visible. And if I were to give you one qualitative difference between this etheric body and the physical body, I would single out just one from among the numerous qualitative differences that exist: The human physical body is subject to gravity. It tends toward the earth. The human etheric body, on the other hand, tends toward the periphery of the universe—that is, in all directions. We usually take into account what is heavy, since we today like to use the scales in our research. But the human organism counters what is heavy with that which is not only not heavy, but which strives away from the Earth, which strives against ordinary Earth’s gravity. Thus, we carry within us not only forces of gravity, but also forces that strive away from the Earth.
[ 12 ] This is the first supersensible body. I could mention many other ethereal characteristics of this first supersensible body, but I will limit myself to this. We have, so to speak, a first human being within us—the physical human being—who is centripetally oriented toward the Earth, striving toward it; we have a second human being who is centrifugally oriented, striving away from the Earth. We have been given true life through the need to maintain a balance between these two configurations of the human being: the heavy physical body, subject to gravity, and the etheric body—our second organization—which strives toward all sides of the universe.
[ 13 ] Now just consider this configuration of the forces of the physical body and the etheric body. You might say to yourself: The etheric body strives in all directions; in a sense, it always wants to become as large as the universe. The physical body is subject to gravity, to weight. It strives toward the center of the Earth. It encircles the etheric body, so that the etheric body mimics the universe, the cosmos, but is initially held within its boundaries by the physical body. And only in this way do we gain a true, penetrating, and real understanding of the human being when we consider the balance between the physical body and the etheric body.
[ 14 ] Nun weiter!
[ 14 ] Now let’s continue! If we truly have a concept of these centrifugal forces striving away from the Earth, then we also see these centrifugal forces in plants. Physically, only minerals exist for us. In them, we find no evidence of centrifugal forces. Minerals are subject purely to gravity. In plants, we also find their external form to be the result of these two forces. But we also realize that we cannot stop at these two configurations if we wish to consider organisms higher up in the series than plants, for the plant has its etheric body; the animal, when we consider it, has life within itself, which we call sensation. It creates a world within itself. This draws our attention to the fact that we must continue our research.
[ 15 ] Now we can indeed further develop human consciousness. It is already a form of consciousness development when we come to see not merely the human physical body, but this physical body embedded, as it were, in a cloud within the etheric body.
[ 16 ] But that is not all there is to human beings; rather, if we can now—just as we strengthen an arm muscle by continually exerting force upon it—strengthen and invigorate our soul so that, so to speak, its thoughts become increasingly real, then we can move on to the next step, which is difficult and not so easy; we can move on to suppressing these thoughts, which are then strong within us because we have, after all, strengthened them.
[ 17 ] If, in ordinary consciousness, one gradually allows one’s sight, hearing, senses, and thinking to fade away, one falls asleep—an experiment that is easy to carry out. But if one has strengthened the soul in this way, as I have described—through training the mind and cultivating one’s entire life of mental images and emotion—then one can in turn suppress this emotional life. For above all, one reaches a state in which one is not asleep, but rather very awake. One must even be careful not to lose the ability to sleep when cultivating this state. Yet if one proceeds as I have described in my books, all necessary precautions have been taken to ensure that one does not experience disruptions in one’s life. One arrives at a state of being fully awake, yet no longer seeing or hearing what the senses would otherwise perceive. One also comes to set aside ordinary memory and ordinary recollection. One stands before the world with an empty but fully alert consciousness.
[ 18 ] Then one sees a third organism in the human being, which I—again, please do not take offense at the term—call the astral organism. Animals also possess it. It is what gives human beings the ability not only to have an etheric body with forces that strive away from the Earth, but also to develop a true inner life and to develop feelings. This is something that is connected neither with the depths of the Earth nor with the vastness of the universe, but rather with an inner permeation by forces that can be perceived as the astral body. This is a third member of the human constitution. I will speak of a fourth member later on. I would now like to say the following about this third member.
[ 19 ] If one comes to understand this third element of human organization in the way I have suggested, it is scientifically incredibly enlightening, for when one comes to understand it, it is suddenly as if the scales have fallen from one’s eyes. For before that, when one really thinks impartially about human growth, one actually says to oneself: nothing but impossibilities! — One sees a person grow from childhood onward; their vital forces are at work; the person is constantly growing. But they do not merely grow—they develop consciousness; they develop an inner reflection of the outer world; they develop consciousness. Can this come from growth? Can this come from the same forces that underlie nutrition and growth?
[ 20 ] Yes, when the organic forces within us that underlie nutrition and growth gain the upper hand, consciousness becomes clouded. So if there is anything within us that represents a hypertrophy of the growth forces—anything that overwhelms us, that represents the nourishing forces—consciousness is immediately clouded. We need something that does not coincide with these forces of growth and nutrition, but rather something that actively counteracts these forces. Human beings grow continuously and nourish themselves continuously; but we have in our astral body, as I have just described it, something that in turn continuously suppresses and breaks down growth and nutrition.
[ 21 ] Thus, in human beings, we have building up in the physical body through its connection to the Earth, building up in the etheric body through its connection to the cosmos, and breaking down in the astral body—a continuous process of breaking down. The astral body continually breaks down organic processes, breaks down cellular life, breaks down glandular life—it breaks everything down.
[ 22 ] That is the secret of human organization. Now we understand why human beings have a soul. If human beings were to grow continuously like a plant, they could not have a soul. The growth processes must first be broken down; after all, they drive the soul away. If we constantly had growth and building processes in our brains—rather than processes of breakdown and destruction—we would be unable to accommodate a soul. Evolution rules out all linearity. Evolution must move backward in a certain direction. Space must once again be made; things must be broken down. That is the secret of the human being, of every animated being.
[ 23 ] Today I would like to present—I would like to discuss—the spiritual-physiological and spiritual-biological aspects, and then move on tomorrow to a description of individual diseases and their healing processes. That is why I wanted to begin with this discussion, and I will take the liberty of continuing once this section has been translated.
[ 24 ] As long as we remain at the level of the animal organization, we are dealing with these three organizations: the physical body, the etheric body, and the astral body. The moment we turn our attention to human beings, we find—if we continue with the same inner spiritual training—that we have before us another level of organization for spiritual perception.
[ 25 ] When we penetrate the animal with spiritual insight, we find within it—in a sense, neutralized and not clearly separated from one another—thinking, feeling, and willing. In the case of the animal, precisely when we look through it, we cannot speak of separate thinking, feeling, and willing, but only of a neutral intermingling of these three elements. In humans, inner life is based precisely on the fact that they can grasp their intentions through calm thinking, can even remain with these calm intentions, and can carry them out or choose not to. An animal, when it has an impulse, carries it out. Human beings distinguish between thinking, feeling, and willing. One can only understand how this comes about by continuing the inner spiritual observation all the way to the fourth human member, the “I” organization, so that we distinguish in the human being the physical body, the etheric body, the astral body—which humans still share with animals—and the actual “I” organization.
[ 26 ] We have just considered that the astral body breaks down the processes of growth, continually holds back the processes of nutrition, and, in a sense, incorporates a slow dying into the human organism. The ego-organization, however, rescues certain elements from this breakdown, and from that which has already been broken down by the astral body—I would say, the substances falling away from the etheric body and the physical body, which are already in the process of breakdown—the ego-organization rebuilds them anew. That is, in fact, the secret of human nature.
[ 27 ] When we look at a human brain, we see in the light-colored regions—the parts of the brain that lie deeper beneath the surface, the parts that extend from the senses as nerve tracts—a very complex organization, but an organization that, to those who can see through it, is in a state of decay—in fact, in a state of continuous decay—even if this decay proceeds so slowly that it cannot be detected by a superficial understanding of physiology. But out of all this, the peripheral brain—the brain that actually underlies human organization—develops in human beings, distinguishing them precisely from animals. In terms of human structure, the central brain—the continuation of the sensory nerves and their connections—is actually more perfect. The outer brain, which underlies the ordinary human constitution, is in fact even more closely related to metabolism than the deeper parts of the brain. But in return, this peripheral brain—which is unique to humans, the true frontal brain—is actually rescued by the “I”-organization from that which would otherwise already be disintegrating. And so it is throughout the entire human organism. The “I-organization” in turn rescues certain elements from the decay caused by the astral body; these elements then form the basis of the harmoniously ordered thinking, feeling, and willing of the human being.
[ 28 ] Of course, I can only hint at these things, but I would like to point out that in the field of spiritual research we proceed with exactly the same precision as any external science can when conducting experiments, and we also feel a sense of responsibility, so that we ask ourselves at all times: Does what we find in spiritual vision correspond to the results of external, empirical, physical research? — Anything else is not accepted in reality, at least not in principle.
[ 29 ] But it is precisely the structure of the brain that points us to this—what one then recognizes through seeing, through spiritual vision, through spiritual perception—namely, that in human beings, underlying the three members—the physical body, the etheric body, and the astral body—is the “I” organization, which, in a sense, rebuilds a “parasite” from the products of decay and, in a sense, brings it back to life. Thus, we have four members of the human organism. In a healthy human organism, these four members must exist in very specific relationships to one another.
[ 30 ] If I were to express this using a scientific analogy, I would say the following: We obtain water only when we combine hydrogen and oxygen in a certain way, according to specific weight ratios; in any other way, oxygen and hydrogen do not form water. Hydrogen and oxygen have a certain relationship to one another. If this relationship is fulfilled, water is formed.
[ 31 ] Likewise, the human being exists when there is a normal relationship—if I may use that term—between the physical body, the etheric body, the astral body, and the “I” organization. We have not just four, but four times four relationships. All of them can be disrupted. The etheric body may predominate, for the living differs from the dead in that, although a balance exists, this balance is unstable. Water simply does not form unless the relationship between hydrogen and oxygen is present. In the human organism, however, an abnormal relationship can arise between the etheric body and the physical body, or between the astral body and the etheric body, or between the “I”-organization and one of these components. They are all interconnected and have specific relationships with one another. If these relationships are disrupted, we are faced with a diseased organism.
[ 32 ] However, this relationship, which can be discerned, is not a uniform one that runs through the entire human being; rather, it differs for each human organ. If we consider a human lung, we see that the physical body, the etheric body, the astral body, and the “I” organization stand in a different relationship to one another in the lung than they do in the brain or the liver. It is precisely this that makes the human being such a complex organism, in which the spiritual and the material stand in different relationships to one another in each of his organs.
[ 33 ] If I may speak more generally today—I will go into specifics tomorrow—I would like to say this about the general picture: An organ—let’s say the liver or the kidney—may have an excess of astral energy. I would like to say that there is a specific balance—one suitable for a healthy human organism—between the kidney as a physical organ, the etheric and astral bodies, and the “I” organization. The astral organization in the kidney may predominate; it may be too strong. It may also be too weak. Both conditions indicate kidney disease.
[ 34 ] However, this same condition—whether the astral organization is too weak or too strong—manifests differently in another organ. You can see from this that just as the physical anatomist and the physical physiologist study the human organism based on its external physical characteristics, so too—once this general spiritual perception has been accepted and practiced—must the human organism be studied with the same precision, and the health and disease of each organ be observed and understood individually. In this way, one gradually arrives at a complete, a total understanding of the human organism. One does not truly understand the human organism by knowing it merely through its physical organization. One understands it only when one comprehends it according to these four aspects that have been mentioned. And one can only penetrate to the essence of a disease when one can describe how, within the human organism, any of the four aspects mentioned either predominates too strongly or recedes too far in one area or another. By directing one’s spiritual gaze toward these things, one indeed arrives at a diagnosis that is held in balance with the material realm on a spiritual level. And in the field of anthroposophic medicine that is being explored here, no remedy available to conventional medicine is neglected; that is out of the question. Rather, what is added to all of this is precisely what becomes possible through this insight into the human organism according to its four constituents when assessing a healthy or sick person.
[ 35 ] In addition, however, it is also possible to have a spiritual perspective not only in relation to human beings, but also in relation to all of nature—that is, to perceive all of nature not only physically, but also spiritually. Only then, however, is one once again in a position to discern the relationship between human beings and nature—specifically in medicine—and the relationship between human beings and remedies.
[ 36 ] Let us consider one example. A very common substance in the Earth’s composition is silicic acid. Silicic acid is found in the beautiful quartz crystals that are so widespread on Earth; but it is also finely dispersed in the air. Twenty-eight percent of the total substance on the Earth’s surface is silicic acid, and forty-eight percent is oxygen. Thus, there is hardly any less silicic acid than oxygen on Earth. Silicic acid forms the beautiful, bright, six-sided prisms and six-sided pyramids. We find them in our mountains and display them in our rooms as special specimens that we admire among our minerals.
[ 37 ] This silicic acid is an infinitely important component of our Earth. But for those who, as I have suggested, can also perceive things spiritually, everything that manifests itself in all quartz and in all siliceous matter is at the same time the outward manifestation of something spiritual.
[ 38 ] This makes people today even more rebellious than they become when one speaks to them about the spirit in human beings. When it comes to human beings, they sometimes put up with it. But when one speaks to them about nature—that wherever a natural being exists, the spirit is also present within that natural being—they won’t stand for it! For in that case, they want to be satisfied with physical nature alone. But that is not the case. There is a tremendous difference between, for example, having silica among us and perceiving it spiritually—such as a quartz crystal or even very fine silica—and perceiving carbon dioxide gas with a trained consciousness. Today, people are simply accustomed to accepting the ordinary physical characteristics: carbonic acid is “carbo,” carbon, and oxygen; silicic acid is silicon and oxygen; and people judge oxygen and silicon based on the properties they exhibit in the retort, which can otherwise be observed through reactions in the chemistry laboratory. The same applies to carbon and oxygen.
[ 39 ] But on top of all this comes the spiritual aspect. And the fact is that in everything siliceous—in everything that is like quartz in its solid state, the rock crystal we find out there in our high mountains—in all of this, this substance, this siliceous substance, allows everything spiritual to pass freely through it. The silicic substance always allows all that is spiritual in the world—that which weaves and lives within the world—to pass freely through it.
[ 40 ] That is the remarkable thing about a quartz crystal: it is like a transit station for the spiritual. After all, twenty-eight percent of the Earth’s total substance is silicic acid, and the spiritual passes through everything that is part of the silicic acid process, just as light passes through something transparent. But rock crystal quartz also occurs in what is called an “opaque” form, known as smoky topaz; even though light does not pass through it, everything spiritual does.
[ 41 ] So, in nature, we are dealing with substances that are simply permeable to the spirit. They are carriers of the spirit. The spirit is within them; they absorb it everywhere and yet hold it back nowhere. They are the true waystations for the spirit.
[ 42 ] While substances such as silicic acid relate to the spiritual in this way, the situation is quite different with carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide has the peculiarity—and there is something spiritual in all physical things—that when the spiritual enters carbon dioxide, it becomes individualized within it. Carbon dioxide strives with all its might to hold onto everything spiritual. The spiritual itself chooses carbon dioxide as its dwelling place. When the spiritual enters the siliceous substance, it wants to move on, to fully experience everything siliceous. When it comes into contact with carbon dioxide, it wants to remain within it. It feels extraordinarily at home in the place where it has taken hold of the carbon dioxide.
[ 43 ] The following is based on this: In animals, we find respiration, blood circulation, and the carbon dioxide process. This process is primarily linked to the astral body. The astral body is at work; it is constantly active in the carbon dioxide process. The carbon dioxide process is the outwardly physical aspect in animals; the astral body is the inner, spiritually active force. The spiritual aspect is the astral body; its physical counterpart is the carbon dioxide process, which underlies exhalation.
[ 44 ] The “I” organization is the spiritual inner core. We have silica in our hair, in our bones, in our sense organs; silica is distributed throughout the entire periphery of the body. Wherever a human being comes into contact in any way with the forces of the external world, there is silica. This silicic acid is the external correlate, the outward manifestation of the “I” organization. Astral body: the inner spiritual aspect; carbonic acid process: the external physical aspect; silicic acid process: the external physical aspect; “I” organization: the inner aspect.
[ 45 ] Now consider this: the ego-organization must, in a certain sense, be strong enough to process and control all the silicic acid processes taking place within it. If the ego-organization is too weak, the silicic acid process manifests physically: a disease process. The astral body must be strong enough to control the carbonic acid process; if it is too weak to do so, carbonic acid or its decomposition products are excreted: the onset of illness.
[ 46 ] Thus, by becoming acquainted with the strong or weak astral body, one sees the cause of the illness precisely in the spiritual realm. By becoming acquainted with the organization of the “I,” one discerns the cause of all those illnesses that either bring about an abnormal breakdown of silicic acid in the body or that—as we will discuss tomorrow—must be treated therapeutically through a silicic acid process. But what emerges from this is the following.
[ 47 ] Through the physical sciences alone, it is possible to administer silicic acid in some processed form as a remedy. This does, of course, exist; although silicic acid is used less frequently in modern medicine, it is still used. But in doing so, one thinks only of what the chemist thinks of—this compound of silicon and oxygen, SiO. That is all one thinks of. In truth, however, when one administers silicic acid, one is administering an external, material substance that does not hold the spirit together but merely allows it to pass through. One must be aware of this. If one administers silicic acid to a person as a remedy, one must formulate the preparation in such a way that the spirit is properly contained within it.
[ 48 ] With remedies that contain carbon dioxide, one must be aware that the astral body is at work within them.
[ 49 ] It is therefore possible to conceive of a therapy that does not merely work with chemical agents, with chemical forces, but rather administers a remedy with full awareness: Just as you administer a dose of a physical substance, or have a patient bathe in or receive an injection of a specific percentage solution of a physical substance, so too do you inject the spiritual into the human organism with that specific substance in a very specific way.
[ 50 ] Thus, it is entirely possible to make the transition to an understanding not merely of the physical substance in the remedy, but of that which acts as a spiritual force within it. This is precisely what was characteristic of ancient medicine, and traditions of it still exist—especially regarding important remedies that are still used today.
[ 51 ] This is what we must return to. And we can do so if, without neglecting physical medicine in any way, we combine spiritual insight with physical understanding—both of human beings and of nature. In doing so, we can proceed just as precisely as we do in the physical sciences.
[ 52 ] This is precisely what anthroposophy does not seek to correct in conventional medicine; rather, simply because it recognizes that conventional medicine inherently demands this from within, it seeks to add it to conventional medicine. People will see this for themselves when the book is published shortly—a work that is, so to speak, the first real exploration of this field, which is currently in press and will present the initial elements. Of course, these things can only be developed gradually, and it will take a long time before the initial elements that are now available can be shaped into a system as beautiful and complete as the one represented by modern medicine in every respect, but the path must be taken, and it will be taken; and the first work to emerge in this direction is the book that arose from the collaboration between myself and my dear friend and colleague in the fields of medicine and other aspects of spiritual research—in the entire field of spiritual research—Dr. med. Ita Wegman, who directs the Clinical-Therapeutic Institute at the Goetheanum. What will be presented in this book, at least as a beginning—the first volume is currently in press—represents just that beginning. Further volumes will follow, for what I am hinting at is the beginning of a broad spiritual understanding in which humanity still has little faith today—and one can understand why it still has little faith. But the fact that successes can ultimately be achieved in this regard even in the field of medicine can already be observed in practice at Dr. Wegman’s Clinical Institute. And it is my conviction that those individuals who approach this continuation and complement to medicine without prejudice—with the same goodwill with which one otherwise approaches physical medicine—will find it by no means difficult to gain access to this spiritual understanding of the human being and to the spiritual understanding of a certain method of healing.
[ 53 ] I have tried to touch only on the fundamental principles. I am well aware that little can be gained from such hints; nevertheless, in the third part today, I would like to begin by—once this section has been translated—moving on to show how, based on such premises, one can in principle gain insight into certain disease processes and thereby lay a foundation for moving from pathology to therapy.
[ 54 ] I would just like to briefly use two examples to illustrate, so to speak, the practical spiritual application of what I have described. Based on what has been said, let us assume the following: In some way, prior to a—if I may put it this way—spiritual diagnosis, it becomes apparent in a person that the etheric body predominates somewhere, that the activity of the etheric body is too strong. So the following has occurred: We are faced with the fact that it is simply apparent to the eye that the etheric body is working too strongly in some organ. The astral body and the “I” organization are not able—the astral body through reduction, the “I” organization through revitalization—to control this predominant process of the etheric body in some organ. Thus, we are faced with an astral organization that has become too weak—and perhaps also with an ego organization that is too weakly guided—and the etheric body predominates. It brings about the processes of growth and nutrition in a particular organ in such a way that the human organism is held together too little by the dominant astral body and by the dominant ego organization.
[ 55 ] At this stage, with the etheric body predominating, the human organism appears to be too strongly exposed to the centrifugal forces reaching out into the cosmos. These forces are at work within the etheric body. They are not in balance with the centripetal forces of the physical body. And the astral body is unable to control what develops. In this case, we are faced simultaneously with a predominance of the silicic acid process and a failure of the “I” organization to control that process.
[ 56 ] We always observe something like this in tumor formation. And in particular, this is how the path to a true understanding of carcinogenic processes—cancer processes—opens up.
[ 57 ] You will always find that, when it comes to research on carcinoma, very promising approaches are being taken. It is precisely in these investigations that the greatest successes have been achieved—successes that are, in fact, the greatest possible in the physical realm. But carcinoma cannot be understood unless one realizes that it involves a predominance of the etheric body that is not held in check or broken down by a corresponding action of the astral body and the “I” organization. And this raises the question: What must be done to partially strengthen the astral organization—the “I” organization—of the affected organ, so that the predominant etheric organization can be sufficiently reduced? This is the question—posed initially in abstract terms—that leads to the therapy of carcinoma, which I will then take the liberty of discussing tomorrow.
[ 58 ] Here, then, through an understanding of the etheric body, we see a path opening up to gradually gain insight into one of the most severe human diseases and to combat it by understanding the spiritual effects present in the remedies. This is an example of a situation where one must look to the etheric body in order to understand the disease thoroughly.
Was entsteht dadurch?
[ 59 ] But let us assume that the astral body predominates—and indeed to such an extent that it predominates throughout almost the entire organism—so that we are dealing with a general, I would say, stiffening of the astral body, such that the astral body develops its inner forces too strongly and, in fact, I would say, assumes a much more important role in the organism than is proper to it. What results from this? First of all, if the astral body cannot be controlled by the ego organization, if its breakdown cannot be appropriately counteracted by a revitalization process to establish a balance, then, above all, symptoms arise that are always associated with an ego organization that is too weak. For when the astral body is too strong, the ego organization is relatively too weak. This is always associated with all the symptoms of illness that stem from an ego organization that is too weak and an astral organization that is too strong.
[ 60 ] This first manifests itself in the form of abnormal cardiac activity. We must therefore identify a complex of symptoms in which one component is excessive cardiac activity.
[ 61 ] Furthermore, one consequence of relatively weak ego activity in relation to the astral body is the prominence of glandular activity. Thus, more or less peripheral glandular organs—because they are not sufficiently controlled by the ego—begin to develop a predominant activity. For example, we see the occurrence of what causes these glands here (in the neck) to swell: goiter develops.
[ 62 ] We further see how, as the astral body stiffens, the silicic acid process—which should act back inward in the reaction—is forced outward, and how the “I” organization is unable to exert a sufficiently strong influence, particularly in the sense organs, where it is supposed to act with corresponding intensity. We therefore see how the eyes swell. The astral body pushes the eyes outward. The “I” organization exists to control this outward pushing of the eyes. Our eyes are held in their proper position—one corresponding to their organization—by the stable yet delicate balance between the ego-organization and the astral body. We now see the eyes protruding, as if they were about to emerge from the organism, because the ego-organization is too weak to hold them properly within the organism. But we also observe a general restlessness setting in, a sensitivity, a nervousness. Finally, because the ego-organization cannot properly counteract the organic processes brought about by the astral body, we see the activity of the astral body becoming predominant. What must happen occurs when the ego organization is too weak and the person is, so to speak, driven and jostled by the astral organization, which is subordinate to the ego organization; we see insomnia, associated with this protrusion of the eyes and abnormal glandular activity—in short, as we come to understand the person, we see Graves’ disease.
[ 63 ] Once we have gained this understanding and recognize that Graves' disease (Morbus Basedow) is caused by an imbalance between the ego and the astral body, we can then attempt to develop a therapy using the appropriate methods.
[ 64 ] As you can see, it is certainly possible to investigate matters in a precise manner—both with regard to their pathological condition and with regard to treatment—and to arrive at the appropriate conclusions through a spiritual understanding of the human being.
[ 65 ] That is what I have taken the liberty of assuming at the outset. Tomorrow, I will then take the liberty of moving on from these two examples I have given to show how such a spiritual pathology also leads to such a spiritual therapy. I will start with these two—I would say—characteristic clinical pictures, carcinoma and Graves’ disease, to show from there how one can, in this way, enrich and complement the therapeutic approach, after first having established a truly precise spiritual foundation for physiology and therapy.
[ 66 ] I will take the liberty of addressing the therapeutic aspect—that is, with regard to the two examples—tomorrow, in order to provide a further picture of the therapy that can result from this foundation.
